Stroke

Flash Player 9 required.

A stroke is a brain attack, which can affect thinking, movement, speech and/or senses, and is caused by blockage or rupture of a blood vessel within or surrounding the brain. When a brain attack occurs, it kills brain cells in the immediate area. A stroke can occur at any age, even in babies and infants. The majority of people who have a stroke survive, however stroke is still the most common cause of death after heart disease and cancer in Western countries.

Personal stories are a valuable source of information and reassurance. They present first-hand accounts of the day to day challenges others have faced, and give insights into the coping strategies they have used.
